Fabulous Five

We have another gum chewer in the family.  The rule in our house is that you can't chew gum until you are five, so this is a highlight of the big day.  David was counting down for weeks, scouting the gum at the grocery store checkout line and lobbing in requests for the fire gum (Wrigley Big Red has a campfire on the package), the pink one, the blue one, the watermelon one.

With a birthday in late December, the logistics of the party are a little difficult to get right.  Last year I got distracted by the holidays and didn't schedule it until late January, which led to all of the drama of Davey claiming he was going to turn four in December and then five at his second birthday party in January and catch up with AJ in age (oh, the horror!)  This year, I got on the ball and scheduled the party right away but chose the Saturday closest to his big day, which also happened to be the Saturday after Christmas.  Never. Again.  There is a video tape of the party somewhere that probably shows one stressed and disorganized mama tired out from the holidays and running around like a chicken with her head cut off.  Birthday parties certainly aren't about the mom, yet the best ones have a mom or dad or both or someone similar who has worked hard in advance to make the day itself run very smoothly.  But then I looked back at these pictures and saw the joy on David's face and remembered how much fun he had and remembered that was all that was important.  (Next year, though, I think we will shoot for early January!)

The party was at the Science Center with alka-seltzer rockets--David was totally floored by the explosions.  I just love his facial expressions here, and it captures pure David.  He is so enthusiastic and gets joy out of so many things big and little.  It makes him a thoroughly enjoyable companion to have on the journey through life.  People comment to us often about his smile, his enthusiasm and his general good-natured personality.  I hope these are traits that he keeps for life.

Cool..she said something is going to explode today.

I got to shake the canister.  Waiting, waiting...
Did you see that?!?  How did that fly up to the ceiling?
Yes!  Explosions + birthday = awesomeness.
Followed by some turtle power awesomeness.  Does it get better than this for a five year-old boy?
