So what does eight look like for David? Eight is playing John Madden football with your brother on your new Xbox and asking your mom if she can bring you some snacks in the basement, please. Eight is having nerf gun wars with your neighbors that are so exciting you almost can't stand it. Eight is the birthday when you want all the boys in your class to play laser tag with you and hit the video arcade afterward.
Eight is also making your own pinewood derby car and getting pretty good at all the sanding. Eight is being able to turn on the gas fireplace for your mom when she cannot figure out the controls. Eight is playing Pokemon Go until your legs are tired and knowing the names of every single Pokemon ever invented. Eight is being totally capable of making your bed but complaining loudly and dramatically every single time you are asked to do it. Eight is telling your sister "way to go!" when she throws you the football in the way you have coached her to.
Eight is walking into the local high school basketball game and having the elementary section part of the stands erupt with your friends calling your name because you seem to know every. single. kid. in your elementary school, as well as all of their parents. "Hi, Logan's dad!" you shout to a guy I have never seen before in my life. He smiles, waves back and says "well hello there, David." You have always been the mayor of your place.
Eight is choosing to have your family birthday dinner at the Pizza Ranch followed by a game of pool at the local bowling alley. And Pokémon cake for dessert, naturally.
If I had to make job predictions at age eight for David as a grown up, they would be mayor of his town, a lobbyist (he is charming, persuasive and extremely persistent when there is something that he wants), or a sales person (see previous explanation). He wants to be a professional football player, a veterinarian or zookeeper or maybe a police officer. As his mom, I am sure he can do it all.
